What is Tween 20 (Polysorbate 20)?
Tween 20 is a non-ionic surfactant and emulsifier composed of polyoxyethylene sorbitan monolaurate. It appears as a pale yellow liquid with a mild odour and is water-soluble. It is a mild detergent widely used in molecular biology and biochemical applications.
Its primary role is to reduce surface tension and prevent non-specific binding in immunoassays like ELISA and Western blotting. It is also suitable for permeabilizing cells and solubilising membrane proteins in various experimental protocols.
